How Does Depression Affect Quality of Sleep?
Depression is the most common mental illness in human beings. It can be mild to moderate depending upon the various types of depression. Depression causes sadness, worthlessness, helplessness, negative thinking, social withdrawal and sleeping problems etc. Various studies have proven that more than 80% of the people suffering from depression also suffer from sleeping problems such as Insomnia and Hypomania. Insomnia is a sleeping disorder. The patient usually gets too little sleep, or does not get good deep sleep. The main causes of Insomnia are too much stress or depression. Most of the people suffering from depression exhibit symptoms of Insomnia. Hypomania is also a sleeping disorder and the sufferer usually sleeps too much. According to experimental studies, depression sufferers sleep as much as 20 hours a day. Hypomania is less common in depression as compared with Insomnia. Depression does affect quality of sleep in so many ways. People suffering from depression exhibit sleeping problems like sleepiness or sleeping too much. Following are some of the problems:
- Sufferer faces problems in going to sleep; the reason is stress and those never lasting thoughts preoccupied in the brain.
- Sufferer very frequently wakes up in the night and finds it tough to go back to sleep. It leads to disrupted sleep.
- In a few cases of depression, sufferers get too much sleep. As a result of which they feel less energized as compared to normal people.
- Rapid eye movement (REM) abnormalities also affect quality sleep.
A quality sleep includes good 6 to 8 hours of sleep without any disruption. But depression causes disruption most of the time. Also a quality sleep means you go to sleep soon after you get to the bed. Depressed person finds it very difficult to go to sleep and is often experience spending hours awake in gloom before going off to sleep. Not waking up too early makes for quality sleep. However, in depression early waking up is the biggest symptom. Quality sleep demands a tension free or stress free mind. A depressed person is always occupied with tensions and stress. For a good quality sleep there should not be REM abnormality at all. REM is a rapid eye movement. Depressed people exhibit REM abnormalities and they find it tough to drift off to sleep.
Depressed people are usually found preoccupied with so many negatives thoughts. They constantly think about negative things. Day or night hardly matters to them. They just want to be alone with their depressed mind. They do not take part in those activities that can energize them. As a result they are found to be in the state of fatigue or have physical problems such as stomach pain, chest pain and headache. For a quality sleep there is no room for any kinds of pain and negative thoughts. You need to have a positive frame of mind for a quality sleep.
