Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs):

TCA’s are one of the first antidepressants used to treat depression. These antidepressants mainly affect two chemical neurotransmitters known as nor epinephrine and serotonin in the human brain. These drugs are very effective in treating depression. Despite the good results, they have a lot of side effects, which is the reason TCA is not commonly used antidepressant. Drugs used under TCA medication include Pertofrane Anafranil, Surmontil, Adapin, Aventyl, Elavil, Norpramin, Pamelor and Sinequan.

Side effects of these drugs are, sexual problems, dry mouth, cloudy vision, and fatigue and sleeping problems. Also weight gain, constipation, urine retention, dizziness problems, daytime drowsiness, and rapid heartbeat can be experienced.

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI)

MAOI’s are also well-known and first used types of antidepressants. These medicines are best for those people that do not respond to all the other medications or techniques to treat depression. If you want to take these medicines then always make sure you do not eat certain dairy products like cheese, butter etc. Consult with the specialist and get instructions for your diet. Drugs used under MAOI include Parnate, Nardil and Marplan.

Side effects of MAOI may be, mild to severe headache, rapid heartbeat, pain in the chest, stiffness in the neck area, vomiting at times. Always seek a medical attention if you see these symptoms in your self.
